Grey Issue Shirt (M1877, M1878)
This is the M1879 government issue shirt, in gray wool flannel. This pattern shirt was a concession to the common soldier practice of cutting the collars off the standard issue shirt. It is the same as the 1874 shirt, except the collar has been left off. It has a small standing collar (neck band), insert sleeves and tin buttons. The shirt has two placket buttons, a neck button and long tails
